It was hot in The City Saturday. The temperature at game time was 95 degrees. As my mom used to say—”it’s hotter than Hades.” Hades is the WASP term for Hell. That’s hot. The seats looked empty, but some fans who went to the game say there were people watching from the air-conditioned spots or they were standing in the shade.
Saturday’s game turned into an old-fashion pitching duel. Jeff Samardzija was great. He went seven innings and gave up one run, two hits, two walks and struck out nine. Not a bad day’s work. I think he’s shaping up pretty well now that we’re almost done.
The Redbirds scored their run in the fourth, but the Giants waited until the last dog was damn-near hung, by scoring the tying run in the ninth. Here’s how it happened: Hunter Pence led-off with a single, Joe Panik moved him over with a sac bunt and Buster Posey hit a single, scoring Pence.
The game went into extra innings—free baseball for everyone! But Nick Hundley, who spent the entire day in the squat decided to put a stop to it by leading off the 10th with a walk-off home run. I guess you can’t blame him.
The final score was: Giants 2, Cardinals 1
Nice game. Helluva comeback. Saturday’s win was brought to you by the Giants’ backstops, because they were responsible for both runs scored.
As I write this, we are tied for #28, but the White Sox are still playing. If they win, we go back to #29. If they lose, we own #28 all by ourselves. Prime real estate.
