I blew it. I watched Wednesday’s game, kept score, took notes and started to write a post about it. I was so exhausted–watching baseball is a tough job, but someone has to do it–I decided to put my feet up and rest my eyes for a few minutes.
Here’s what I found out—the one night you count on your usual disrupted sleep pattern is the one night you manage to sleep straight through until morning.
Speaking of eye-openers, how about Wednesday’s game? Tyler Blach was tremendous until the seventh. I’m seeing a pattern. Lately, our starters have gone six innings, but can’t seem to work their way out of the seventh. What happened to the idea of having back–end guys to take the 7th, 8th and 9th? We’ve got the guys for it, and they can add in a lefty specialist–like Josh Osich or Steven Okert–when we need one.
I felt the way Ty Blach looked as he watched his carefully guarded 5-0 game lose ground–partly his own doing–when the Tigers scored four runs in the seventh. He looked shell-shocked. And who could blame him?
I think it might be the time to try giving the game to the relievers with clean innings as much as possible. I get it—if a reliever gets in trouble and you have to switch pitchers with men on, so be it. But if you know you’re going to switch to a reliever in the middle of the seventh, why not make it a preemptive strike? Pun totally intended.
I gotta run, game’s gonna start soon and I still have a score card to fill out. You’ll hear from me later.
As always, nothing but love for Philadelphia.
