The Giants win the game! The Giants win the game! Where is Russ Hodges when we need him? This victory was as exciting as when Bobby Thomson hit the shot heard round the world. And I wasn’t even born then.
Tonight’s win felt the way Russ Hodges call sounded. It was exciting, it was against the Dodgers, and the Dodgers were favored to win. You can’t beat that.
The Dodgers scored a run in the first too. They scored another in the second to tie the game.
Buster Posey hit a solo home run in the third, giving the Giants the lead and giving Clayton Kershaw fits. The Giants scored again in the fifth when Gorkys Hernandez bunt got him to first and Kershaw’s overthrow advanced him to second. Gorkys scored when Arroyo drove a single to left.
The final score was: Giants 4, LA 3
The big difference between last night’s win and that long-ago triumph at the Polo Grounds is this—it wasn’t a walk-off. That’s ok. When Derek Law struck out Yasiel Puig swinging, I pictured Law galloping around the bases in a victory lap just like Thomson’s. It was just as exciting to me.
