SF Giants Faith and Hope

To the poetic, “hope is the thing with feathers.” In the pre-game show, Tim Flannery said “hope is not a strategy”. It may not be for the pros, but to baseball fans, hope is the thing with white cowhide, red stitching and a wooden bat.  Hope is all we got. Well, hope and a lot of faith.

Matt Cain was the starting pitcher for Wednesday night’s game. I’ve been a big fan of the Horse for years. We are a house divided. My husband’s favorite since 2010 has been Madison Bumgarner.  Imagine if you will, how much I pay for the cocky attitude I had from  2010 to 2012.

When Cain takes the mound nowadays all I have is faith and hope. Wednesday he gave us a good dose of both. He pitched five complete innings and faced two more batters in the sixth. He gave up one run, five hits and three walks. He struck out six. Cory Gearrin finished out the sixth by striking out the side. George Kontos pitched a scoreless seventh, Derek Law gave up a run in the eighth and the brand new daddy–Hunter Strickland–pitched a 1, 2, 3 shut down ninth.

Cain helped himself out at the plate by hitting a double in the fifth and scoring on Denard Span‘s single.  Brandon Belt drew a walk, advancing Span to second. Hunter Pence hit a single, scoring Span and advancing Belt to third. Belt scored on Conor Gillaspie‘s single.

The Giants scored three more runs in the seventh. Brandon Crawford drew a walk and scored on Nick Hundley‘s double. Joe Panik drew a walk and Jarrett Parker smacked a high fly ball to right that was scant inches from a round-tripper. But he ended up with a two RBI stand-up triple that scored Hundley and Panik. And that was the at bat Parker–not to mention the rest of us–was waiting for.

Arizona’s only runs were the bookends they scored–one at the beginning of the game and one at the end.

The final score was: Giants 6. Arizona 2

Hope and Faith. For baseball fans it’s our only strategy*. And you know what I think? It’s a pretty good one.

*I still reserve the right to–when necessary–sacrifice a bucket of chicken, shake out some troll dolls, light a cigar and drink rum for Jobu. I haven’t completely lost my mind. Please.
