SF Giants spring upset

The Giants were cruising along with a three-run lead over the Seattle Mariners through five innings, adding another run in the sixth and one in the seventh, only to have Seattle gobble up the lead until there was nothing left and then some. Here’s what happened:

Matt Moore was on the mound for the Giants and he was masterful. He pitched three perfect innings, followed by a one-walk, no run fourth and a two-hit, no run fifth. He struck out four.

Denard Span led off the first inning with a base hit. Joe Panik followed with a double to left, driving Span home. Jarrett Parker hit a single scoring Panik. In the third inning Parker returned with a solo home run.

The Giants had Jae-gyun Hwang in our line up as the DH–that’s him in he picture above after the guys told him to wear green for St. Patrick’s Day–but he had to be scrapped when he was hit in the head with a ball during BP. He’s ok–just a precaution. I can’t wait to see him in the bigs. This kid looks like he knows how to have fun. But I digress.

Tim Federowicz was the last minute add for DH. He hit a double in the sixth and scored when Span drove a triple to right. The Mariners scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, narrowing the Giants lead to just one run.

Chris Marrero hit a solo home run in the seventh, adding another run to the Giants lead. But the Mariners came back in the eighth and scored three runs, putting them on top.

The final score was: Giants 5, Seattle 6

Naturally I was fired up for the USA vs. Dominican Republic game in the evening. Brandon Crawford was the only Giants’ player in the game because Jim Leyland–the team USA manager–alternates the catching duties between Jonathan Lucroy and Buster Posey. Tonight was Buster’s night off.

The DR drew first blood with two runs in the first. But USA caught up to them in the third and pulled ahead in the fourth when BCraw singled and Giancarlo Stanton followed up with a home run. After DR scored on a solo home run in the seventh, team USA added on two more runs in the eighth.

BCraw picked the grounder hit by the last DR hitter and threw to first to get the last out of the game.

The final score was: USA 6, Dominican Republic 3

The Giants face the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday at 1:05 pm. Jeff Samardzija will be on the hill for the Giants. You can watch the game on CSNBA (for the locals) MLB Network (for the out of market crowd) or listen on KNBR 680. Up to you. You know me, I like the visual. And I’m really grateful we’re watching baseball. This last winter was too long.
