The Giants played the Texas Rangers at their ST facility in Surprise, AZ. The game was televised on the Rangers Fox Sports SW station. Texas won. Good for them.
The Giants were off to an exciting start. For an inning at least. Denard Span drew a walk to lead off the first. That’s pretty good since he was facing Yu Darvish, Texas’ Japanese pitching phenom. When Joe Panik struck out, Span stole second and ran hell bent for leather to home plate on Hunter Pence‘s RBI single. Mac Williamson hit a single too, but the inning ended leaving Pence and Williamson stranded aboard.
After that the Giants were held scoreless, with a couple more base hits here and there–even a couple of extra base hits–Nick Hundley hit a double and Span hit a ground rule double. They just didn’t string any together.
Jeff Samardzija had a tough go in the first–he gave up two runs on three hits and a walk. He had a tougher time in the second–starting with three back-to-back singles and a grand slam home run. Texas scored another run in the fourth when Samardzija allowed a walk followed by an RBI double.
To put it mildly, things didn’t go our way. Or it wasn’t our day. Take your pick.
The final score was: Giants 1, Texas 7
That’s ok, we’ll get ’em next time.
Tuesday’s game is against Cleveland at their ST facility. Game time is 1:05 pm with Alberto Suarez on the mound for the Giants. You can catch the game on audio through MLB.com or watch the Indians broadcast on MLB.TV. Tomorrow I might try watching the picture on MLB.TV with the sound from the Giants audio at MLB.com. Look at me getting all technical. Who’s impressed?
Following tonight’s game the Giants optioned the following right handed pitchers: Crick, Gardeck, Johnson, Moronta, Slania and infielder Gomez. The Giants have also reassigned outfielders Bernard, Duggar, and Slater, catchers Winn and Garcia, and infielder Jones.
