It’s hard to imagine, with all the rain, storms and floods we are experiencing–and even though it’s only February–spring has arrived. Our boys of summer are in Arizona and they’re there to play. I know what it says on the calendar, I can read. I don’t care. It’s spring.
The guys are excited with some of the new additions–especially new pitcher Mark Melancon and his personal catcher, Nick Hundley. Mark and Nick, sounds like family to me. Anyway, Hundley isn’t really Melancon’s personal catcher, but they went to college together, were in each others weddings and their wives hang out. Nice package deal. I think they’re going to like it here.
Hundley is a nice addition to back up Buster and Brownie–as Bochy likes to call him–AKA Trevor Brown to us mortals. Depth! at backstop. Works for me.
ICYMI, the Giant who made a huge impact in 2014, helped cement a championship run and the guy girls love to gawk, gaze, gape and goggle–Michael Morse–is back. BFF Vickie is giddy. Morse said he still has something left, and he wanted to give it a go with the Giants. Apparently, he caught up with Bobby Evans at Hunter Pence‘s wedding and sold Evans on the idea of giving him another shot. All he has to do is make it out of camp and we’ll get to see him again.
Gone Guys–Giants who have moved on: Gregor Blanco–currently a DBack, Angel Pagan remains a free agent, Ehire Adrianza is competing for a spot with the Twins, Santiago Casilla is right back where he started across the bay with the A’s, Sergio Romo got picked up by the Dodgers–oh calm down, ladies–he wasn’t offered a spot with the Giants and he wants to play! I don’t blame him for going home.
Of all the Giants who won’t make it back this year, Jake Peavy‘s story is the toughest. Peavy was caught up in an investment scam–his money guy ripped him off for million$ and his wife filed for divorce. That was the icing on the cake of what was arguably the worst season of his career. Jerry Crasnick, ESPN Senior Writer wrote all about it. Here’s a link if you want to read more: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/18742429/for-jake-peavy-baseball-take-back-seat
And the rest of us thought we had a lousy 2016. It’s still possible for Jake to pick up a spot with the Padres later in the season. Or who knows? Maybe Bud Black will invite him to Colorado. I’ll keep an eye out and let you know.
Javier Lopez will join his old teammate and fellow lefty specialist, Jeremy Affeldt, in the booth helping Kuip–Duane Kuiper, while Kruk–Mike Krukow, oversees the action from afar for a few games. Lopez and Affeldt, or Affeldt and Lopez? Could they be the future Kruk and Kuip? We could do worse.
Friday, February 24th, the Giants play the Reds at 12:05 pm. Catch the game on KNBR.
Stay tuned–Wednesday, March 1st we’re playing the Dodgers in a televised game at 5:05 PM on CSNBA or MLB Network.
Oh, it’s beginning to look a lot like baseball…
