SF Giants Shark Shuts out Braves

08.26 Cq0d-HVUEAEV885I’ll have what they’re having. I know, they probably just ate their Wheaties. But I also think Matt Moore’s near no-no has given the Giants a much-needed jolt. They left LA feeling like Giants and set out Friday night to prove that’s exactly who they are.

The jury is in–they met their burden of proof. They were almost untouchable. Oh sure, the Braves got some hits in, but they never drew blood. Jeff Samardzija had good command of his stuff and the defense was on the ball. Literally.

Samardzija’s night started a little wobbly–fortunately, timely strike-outs and stellar defense kept his feet out of the fire–and he settled in after the first couple of innings. In seven innings pitched, he gave up seven hits, three walks and struck out six.

Hunter Strickland (the eighth) and Cory Gearrin (the ninth) pitched shut down innings to finish the game.

The Giants bats are heating up and not a moment too soon. In the bottom of the first, with two out, Buster Posey singled, Brandon Crawford singled and on the Braves shortstop’s throwing error, Buster advanced to third. Buster scored on Brandon Belt’s RBI single. Joe Panik’s RBI double scored both Crawford and Belt.

The Giants scored again in the second inning when our new outfielder Gorkys Hernandez reached on a fielding error, Samardzija bunted him over to second, he advanced to third on Denard Span’s ground out and scored on Angel Pagan’s two-run homer. In the fourth Samardzija doubled and scored on Span’s RBI single. Buster scored a run in the fifth on a base hit and Belt’s RBI double. The final score was:

Giants 7, Braves 0

That was fun. The guys were putting together hits and scoring like it was a day in May. Make hay while the sun shines because the schedule gets tougher next week. But let’s not think about that now. We’ll think about it tomorrow. Southern belles have nothing on Giants gamer babes.

Saturday’s game starts at 6:05 pm with Jake Peavy on the mound for the Giants. Catch the game on CSN-BA or KNBR 680.

We’re heading down the right road now, it’s like the yellow brick road, only it’s made of dirt and has a white line painted on it. Let’s all lock arms point our toes toward the post season and sing all together now: “just a loyal fan, trying to do the best I can…”  Don’t Stop Believing.
