The Giants were humming along nicely winning games here, losing a one-run game there, yet somehow when we face the A’s things fall apart. Fast.
Jeff Samardzija had another lousy outing, but I’m not giving up on him. Pitchers go through this. Remember August 2010? Tim Lincecum, our Cy Young Award winning Ace, was putting up W’s right and left that year. Turned the calendar page to August and suddenly he couldn’t locate a pitch with a flashlight and a map. Nothing but L’s for his August starts–every one of them. Turned the calendar to September and our old Timmy-“The Freak”-was back. Everyone blew a sigh of relief. Especially Bochy.
I hope that’s what will happen with Samardzija. When we turn the calendar page to July, we’ll have our winning pitcher back. He’s just going through his own private June Swoon. Give him some space. He’ll be back.
What scared me was the A’s pitcher–a Rollie Finger/Catfish Hunter look-alike–was pitching a No Hitter until the fifth, when Angel Pagan got a hit. He pitched a shutout until the eighth.
Ramiro Pena led off with a single, Conor Gillaspie followed with another single and Jarrett Parker drew a walk to load the bases. Relief pitcher Chris Stratton ground into a double play, but Pena made it home. Joe Panik drew a walk and the A’s changed pitchers. While Brandon Belt was at the plate, the new pitcher threw a wild pitch that went back to the fence, allowing Gillaspie to score.
In the ninth Mac Williamson singled and advanced to third on Trevor Brown’s single. Pena’s single drove Williamson home. The final score was:
Giants 3, A’s 8
Here’s the good news: we didn’t get shutout.
Something I forgot to mention in yesterday’s write up: Bruce Bochy reached his 800th win after the Giants beat the Phillies. A nice milestone. I hope he’s around for 800 more.
