I see a couple of recurring themes lately: one–our pitchers help themselves with RBI’s like in Saturday’s and Sunday’s games, and two–what’s with the 1-0 ball games? Not that I’m complaining. I know a 1-0 win is just as good as a 20-0 win. A win is a win is a win is a win…Not only that, our unwitting leader Duane Kuiper announced after Monday’s game: “I’m worried that if they start to hit, they’ll LOSE.”
Another pitching duel at AT&T Park, the game went scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, when Hunter Pence pinch hit for Johnny Cueto with Brandon Belt on at first base. Pence popped it up but the ball was lost on Padres right fielder Matt Kemp, who missed the catch and kicked the ball around a little, giving Belt all the time he needed to score from first for the walk-off win. In case you missed all the hints, the final score was:
Giants 1, Padres 0
For Cueto it was his third complete game– two of them were back-to-back starts, his third complete game against the Padres, and his second complete game shutout against the Padres. All in 2016. Perhaps the Padres will be about as happy to see Johnny Beisbol on the mound as they were to see Tim “the Freak” Lincecum after he no-hit them twice. This win marks Cueto’s seventh win and the ninth win for the Giants on a Cueto start this season.
Speaking of former Giants pitchers who own a piece of my Giant heart: Ryan Vogelsong was the Pirates starting pitcher in a make-up game they were playing against the Rockies in Pittsburgh Monday. Vogey was taking his at bat when he was hit in the face by a pitch. He was taken off the field on the cart, loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital where he remains with injuries to his face.
According to Pirates head trainer Todd Tomczyk , Vogelsong suffered an injury to “the eye itself, which includes the orbital” bone surrounding the eye.
Nicole Vogelsong tweeted: “I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the outpouring of love & prayers for Ryan. He is stable & will be ok. Pirates will update more tomorrow.”
It looked pretty scary to me. I’ll post more when I know more.
Tuesday’s game is set for 7:15 pm and according to the preview will be shown on ESPN (are you kidding me? again?) and CSN-BA (I sure hope so). You can also tune into KNBR 680. The good news is it’s a Jeff Samardzija start.
