Last night’s game didn’t go according to plan. Not my plan, anyway. I said it was a must–win ball game, and I meant what I said when I said it. Today’s game, however, tops it. So I’m changing my mind and calling yesterday’s game “it would have been a nice game to win if the Giants had pulled it off.”
Today’s game is the absolute, bona fide, I really mean it, seriously must–win game. Otherwise we get swept. The only sweeping allowed is when the Giants are holding the broom.
I gotta say, though, about last night: Bumgarner was great. Sure he gave up a base hit and a home run in the seventh, but those things happen. To good pitchers. Look at Zack Greinke–the guy is supposedly one of the best in the bigs, finishing last season with an unbelievable 1.66 ERA, the lowest in the MLB. Last night the Giants got hit after hit off him. The only problem is they had trouble closing the deal.
The Giants are leaving too many guys standing on the bases–last night they left seven behind. The night before they left ten without scoring a run. I guess that makes last night’s game an improvement–they scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, Gregor Blanco hit a triple and scored on Angel Pagan’s single. It wasn’t enough though. Speaking of improvement: Matt Duffy, who has been in a bit of a slump since the season started, hit two doubles last night. That’s a great start, let’s hope he keeps going and it gets contagious. The final score was:
Giants 1, Arizona 2
The game was a pitching duel that could have gone either way. That means we’re getting closer. It’s still way too early to worry and we’re going to lose another 50–60 games before it’s over—that’s just reality—but I would like to see the Giants spread it around a little. We’re in a four-game skid–I don’t want to see it go to five. The Giants are a great team–they just need to play like one.
Today’s game would be a good place to start. We’ve got Johnny Cueto on the mound–he hasn’t lost a game yet. Game time is 12:45 on CSN–BA or KNBR 680.
It’s time to rattle the Snakes.
