I’m speechless. The Giants were swept in a four game series for the second time–ever–at AT&T Park. It got really ugly. Even before the bench-clearing incident in the eighth.
Johnny Cueto was great. He pitched well, he kept the Giants in the game and he even scored the first run of the game–again–which put the Giants on the board in the third.
What went wrong? Clutch hitting. Our offense is slumping–big time.
There are a couple of good take–aways, though. First–the last time, and the only other time, the Giants were swept in a four game series at AT&T Park was in 2014. Want to hear weird? It was a game against the Reds–Cueto’s former team–and the game Cueto pitched? The Giants lost 6–2. It was part of our June Swoon that year. And yet we still won the World Series.
Second–Matt Duffy has his mojo back. He hit two singles Tuesday night, two doubles last night and two singles again today. Duffy has been in a slump for longer than anyone else and the fact that he has come out of it means the rest of the offense will start hitting soon. I hope. As the guys said in the post–game wrap: this too will pass. Krukow kept it real by adding: ” like a kidney stone.” Yes, it will pass, but Kruk is right–it’s still painful.
Brandon Crawford hit a single, giving the Giants three hits total. Bochy said without the walks we probably don’t score any runs. He’s right. The Arizona starter walked the bases loaded and even walked in the first run (Cueto’s). Brandon Belt hit into a double play and Denard Span made it home. The final score was:
Giants 2, Arizona 6
The Marlins are coming to town tomorrow and the Giants have their work cut out for them. The Marlins hitting coach is the guy who made his career making splash hits at AT&T Park: former Giant Barry Bonds. He still holds the splash hit record.
Game time is 7:15 pm and you can watch on NBC Bay Area or listen on KNBR 680.
Hopefully, the Giants will get their bats knocking and win some games.
All I have to say is this: Get out your tartar sauce and cut up some lemons. Fish. It’s what’s for dinner.
