SF Giants you can’t win ’em all

460x Cain

That didn’t go the way I’d hoped. You know what I always say though‒it’s very tough to sweep. Ok, so we lost this game, but we won the series. That’s what counts. Except this one doesn’t. Oh yeah.

Unfortunately, the A’s were on top of their game and the Giants‒not so much.

Matt Cain was pitching for the Giants and he was magnificent. Until the third inning. He threw a hanging curve and the A’s hitter made him pay full price with a solo home run. Then, with a couple of runners on board, Denard Span made two errors on the same play, costing the Giants two runs. The good news for Cain was they were unearned.

Cain bounced back in the fourth, giving up just a one out base hit, followed by a nicely turned double play to end the inning. The fifth was tougher for Cain‒he ended up throwing 27 pitches for one walk, a fly out and two ground outs. That’s a lot of work for four at bats.

Mike Broadway pitched the seventh and loaded the bases by walking the first three batters. The fourth one flied out and the fifth one hit into a double play‒the second one of the day by our defense‒ending the inning. Josh Osich pitched the eighth and gave up the A’s second, and final, home run of the game. A pair of matching bookends.

The Giants hitters had some trouble getting started. In fact, the only base runners in the first seven innings were: Hunter Pence, who drew a walk in the first and reached on an error in the fourth; and Matt Duffy who hit a double in the second. The worst inning was the fifth, when the A’s pitcher, Eric Surkamp, a former Giant, threw a total of six pitches to retire the three Giants he faced. In the eighth Mac Williamson reached first on a one-out walk, Miguel Olivo followed with a base hit and Hak-Ju Lee ground into a double play ending the inning.

Ehire Adrianza, who made the big team at the end of spring training, saved the Giants from being shut out with a solo home run in the ninth. The final score was:

Giants 1, A’s 4

You know what they say‒you can’t win them all, not even when it’s just practice.
