Vince Lombardi once said “Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.” You don’t have to tell me that. I’m a GIANTS fan. I lived through the June Swoon and the July Droop. It’s August, and it’s time to break the losing habit and acquire a winning habit. The GIANTS look like they are trying to do just that. I know it’s only August 4th–I can read a calendar. Work with me here, folks, I’m looking for the silver lining–right now the GIANTS are 0.750 for August. I like the direction the GIANTS are headed–small sample size notwithstanding. I was thoroughly disappointed for Hudson today–I’d like to see him get that elusive W. He deserves it.
The GIANTS got off to a shaky start. But remember yesterday’s lesson? A shaky start doesn’t mean a shaky finish. The Mets drew 1st blood with a 2-run HR in the 1st. The GIANTS got on the board in the 3rd when Hunter Pence doubled on a ground ball to right field, Buster Posey drew a walk and Pablo Sandoval plated both with a 2 RBI double. Game tied. After 3, the score was:
GIANTS 2, Mets 2
The Mets scored another run in the 5th. Neither team scored in the 6th. Hunter Pence led-off the 7th with a high flying triple to center field. While Buster Posey was at the plate, the Mets’ pitcher tossed a wild pitch and Hunter Pence scored. Game tied again. After 7, the score was:
GIANTS 3, Mets 3
The game remained tied at 3 until the top of the 9th. With 2 outs and nobody on, Gregor Blanco hit a sharp ground ball for a base hit. With Posey at the plate, Blanco stole 2nd. After Posey drew a walk, Pablo Sandoval hit a ground-rule RBI double scoring Blanco. The GIANTS take the lead. Santiago Casilla closed the game with a 1, 2, 3 shut-down 9th inning. The final score was:
GIANTS 4, Mets 3
Today’s game was the final game of a 4-game series. The GIANTS won 3 of those games–winning the series. It’s safe to say the GIANTS will enjoy a happy flight to Milwaukee where they take on the Brewers tomorrow night. In the meantime, Hunter Pence is inspiring fans wherever he goes–apparently accusing someone of liking Godfather 3 is the equivalent of saying “your mother wears army boots.”
Lombardi really seemed to be bothered by the whole “winning isn’t everything” philosophy. We’re all familiar with the Vince Lombardi quote “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” But one I hadn’t heard, also attributed to Lombardi: “If winning isn’t everything, why do they keep score?” Why, indeed?
