ok, it’s already old. Sorry, I just had to use it. Welcome to the Bigs, Joe Panik!! Our new 2nd baseman was called up from AAA Fresno on Friday night. He arrived in Arizona yesterday–not before his parents though–they were so excited they must have hopped on the 1st plane out of New York after his 3 AM phone call to let them know he got THE call. He pinch-hit in last night’s game (he drew a walk) and Bochy put him the starting line-up for today’s game. Now for the really big news:
THE GIANTS WIN A GAME! THE GIANTS WIN A GAME! THE GIANTS WIN A GAME!
Read that out loud and pretend you’re Russ Hodges calling Bobby Thomson’s “shot heard round the world”. GIANTS fans everywhere heaved a huge sigh of relief last night as Vogey and the guys put up a W to break the GIANTS 6 game losing streak. The “Killer Ps” got on base in the 1st, with Pence and Posey hitting singles while Pablo plated Pence with his own single. Colvin got an RBI base hit to score Posey and Pablo. In the 2nd, Posey hit a double followed by Pablo’s RBI single. The DBacks scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. After 2, the score was:
GIANTS 4, Arizona 2.
Crawford hit a triple in the top of the 5th and Colvin got put out at 1st but earned another RBI when Crawford came home on the play. The DBacks added another 2 runs to their score in the bottom of the inning. Hunter tacked on in the 6th with a solo HR. No more runs were scored after that by either team. Final score:
GIANTS 6, DBacks 4
Joe Panik got the nod from Bochy to start Sunday’s game at 2nd base and he played a great game–making great plays on the field, getting a couple of hits and an RBI. The game started as an old-fashion pitching duel, with neither team scoring until the GIANTS put a run on the board in the 5th. Crawford reached 1st on a walk and came home on Colvin’s RBI double. Colvin got put out trying to stretch it to 3. After 5, the score was:
GIANTS 1, DBacks 0
The score remained the same until the 9th, when Hunter Pence got a base hit and scored on Posey’s RBI double. Posey scored on Crawford’s base hit and Crawford scored on Panik’s RBI double. Bumgarner pitched a great game, taking a 1 hit shut-out into the bottom of the 9th where he gave up another hit. Romo came in to close it out, the DBacks scored 1 run, but the GIANTS kept it there with a double play and a game-ending strike out. The final score was:
GIANTS 4, DBacks 1
I knew we could do it. Just have to have a little faith–well, maybe a lot of faith–and a shot in the arm in the form of a home-grown 2nd baseman who looked like a seasoned pro out there.
