Poets and Pitchers

“Poets are like baseball pitchers. Both have their moments. The intervals are the tough things.”–Robert Frost

thPM3PST18Robert Frost was right. And Timmy’s intervals were never more pointedly illustrated than yesterday’s game. The GIANTS hosted the Mets for the 3rd game of a 3 game series. The GIANTS won the 1st two games and were looking for a sweep. Well, I was anyway.

Lincecum took the mound for the GIANTS and the 1st inning got ugly in a hurry. He walked the 1st batter and I groaned–inwardly, but I still groaned. While the next batter was at the plate, the 1st batter stole 2nd. Then Timmy struck out the guy at the plate and while he was at it, caught the 1st guy trying to steal 3rd. The next guy got a base hit and the guy after him hit a homerun.Timmy’s intervals could be measured in seconds. The GIANTS came up to the plate to face former GIANTS prospect Zack Wheeler. The GIANTS traded him in 2011 for Carlos Beltran, in what turned out to be a short-term rental. Don’t get me started. Beltran would make a good fit for the Dodgers. He’s a prima donna. He goes on the DL for any injury that requires a Band-Aid. He…see??? I told you not to get me started! Anyway, other than walking Pence and letting Pence reach 2nd when he made a throwing error trying to pick off Pence, Wheeler retired the side. Scoreless. After 1, the score was:

GIANTS 0, Mets 2

Brandon+Crawford+World+Series+Detroit+Tigers+EyizVwSyCnLlThe 2nd inning was a different story. Lincecum retired the Mets 1, 2, 3.  Sanchez led-off for the GIANTS and hit a single. Colvin was up next and HE hit a single. Then along comes Crawford, who not only hit a single, he got an RBI single, scoring Sanchez. Colvin advanced to 3rd. Hicks struck out, but while he was at the plate, Crawford took 2nd on a wild pitch. Blanco came to the plate and smoked the ball into right field for a double. Crawford scored. Colvin scored. Blanco tried to stretch his double into a triple, but got put out at 3rd. The damage was done, though, because he was out after the runners scored. After 2, the score was:

GIANTS 3, Mets 2

In the 3rd inning, Lincecum retired the Mets 1, 2, 3. Again. Hunter Pence led-off for the GIANTS and got hit by a pitch. He took his base. Sandoval got a base hit and Pence moved to 3rd. Morse came to the plate and hit a ground ball for a double play, taking out both him and Panda, but Pence scored on the play. After 3, the score was:

GIANTS 4, Mets 2

img24583763Neither team scored in the 4th or 5th. The Mets scored in the 6th with a solo HR. Adrianza, pinch-hitting in the pitcher’s spot,  led-off the GIANTS half of the 7th with a funny little pop-up that didn’t find a glove. He advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch while Blanco was at the plate. Blanco hit an RBI single, scoring Adrianza. In the top of the 8th, the Mets scored a run, and in the bottom of the inning so did the GIANTS. Brandon Crawford, with 2 out, hit a double into center field. Brandon Hicks followed with an RBI single to center field, allowing Crawford to score. The final score was:

GIANTS 6, Mets 4

That’s it. We swept the Mets. We’re gonna need a bigger broom.
