Holy Walk-Off, Batman!

Last night was superhero night at the Yard. I’m just going to put it out there–Hunter Pence may be my favorite GIANT, but Michael Morse is my hero.

My friends, Anne-Marie and Doug. She's a lifelong GIANTS fan, he's a Mets fan. It's ok! He's from New York.

“It’s clobberin’ time”–The Thing, Fantastic Four and it looked like the Mets set out to clobber the GIANTS. The Mets scored 1 run in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd and kept the GIANTS scoreless until the 5th. After 4 innings, the score was:

GIANTS 0, Mets 3

Tim Hudson was slated to lead-off in the bottom of the 5th, but his night was over. He made a valiant effort to keep the GIANTS in the game and limit the damage. Gregor Blanco stepped up to pinch-hit for Hudson. He got a respectable base-hit, and Pagan followed with another base-hit. Pence drew a walk. Posey got to the plate and with no outs, hit a ground ball into a double play. Blanco took advantage of the busy infield and scored on the play. After 5, the score was:

GIANTS 1, Mets 3

In the 6th inning, the Mets took back the run we gained. Their lead-off hitter drew a walk and scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the 6th, with 2 outs, Crawford hit a single, Hicks reached on an error by the Mets’ 3rd baseman, and Sanchez–who pinch-hit in the pitcher’s spot drew a walk. Pagan hit a nice, 2 out, 2 RBI single, scoring both Crawford and Hicks. After 6, the score was:

GIANTS 3, Mets 4

Both teams went scoreless in the 7th and 8th. Jeremy Affeldt took the mound for the GIANTS in the 9th and got the side out. The GIANTS came to the plate for their last at-bats of the game. Pagan led-off and struck out, but when the catcher couldn’t hang on to the last pitch, a strike, he quickly lit out for 1st. The catcher threw to 1st to get Pagan out, but the throw was offline and Pagan beat it out by a second…he was SAFE!!! Pence came up to the plate and hit a single and Pagan raced hell-bent for leather to home and made it! Game tied. Anne-Marie took a picture of Doug to capture his reaction to the tied score.

The Mets intentionally walked Sandoval, and Michael Morse hit a huge single to right field. Hunter Pence came home, on an amazing walk-off hit and the GIANTS won the game! So, the bullpen came into the game after Hudson came out, Kontos, Gutierrez, Lopez and Affeldt all pitched 1 inning. The winning pitcher? Affeldt, because he pitched the 9th. Apparently it’s his birthday week! The final score was:

GIANTS 5. Mets 4
